Monitoring the Rain GardensWe are using various pieces of equipment to monitor three of the rain garden basins: basins 1, 2 and 4.
Each basin has a different design, and receives rainwater from different part of the Renfrew Close area. Basin 1 is designed to hold rainwater from a 1 in 10 rainfall event Basin 2 is made up of an inner and an outer basin it is designed to hold rain water from a 1 in 2 rainfall event in the inner basin, and a 1 in 100 rainfall event in the outer basin. Basin 4 is designed to hold rainwater from a 1 in 10 rainfall event |
What is a 1 in 2 or a 1 in 100 rainfall event?
Where a rain event is described as a 1 in something, this refers to a measure of the likelihood of that event happening over the time period, this is called the recurrence interval.
The recurrence interval is based on the probability that the named rainfall event will be equalled or exceeded in any given year. so a 1 in 2 year event is much more likely to happen in 1 year than a 1 in 100 year rain event is. Essentially during a larger event such as a 1 in 100 event, there will be a greater volume and intensity of rainfall. However as these are based on probabilities it is just possible that more than one large rain event could happen in any one year! Fortunately the Renfrew Gardens are designed to cope with such extreme events, it is very unlikely to ever see a 1 in 100 year event!
